The Levels of Reiki Training
Reiki capability is not taught in a traditional academic way; instead, it is passed down from a teacher to a student through an energetic process called an attunement. Training is traditionally split into three or four progressive levels:
- Level I (Shoden – “First Teachings”): The introductory stage focuses entirely on self-healing and energy awareness. Students learn the history of Reiki, basic hand positions, and how to channel energy for themselves or close loved ones.
- Level II (Okuden – “The Inner Teachings”): This level grants official practitioner status. Students are introduced to sacred Reiki symbols and mantras to enhance energy flow, balance emotions, and perform distance healing across time and space.
- Level III / Master (Shinpiden – “Mastery Teachings”): This level is centered around deep personal transformation, spiritual growth, and self-mastery. Practitioners receive the Master symbol and learn advanced energetic techniques.
- Master Teacher: Often bundled with or taught immediately after Level III, this designation trains the practitioner in how to perform attunements and teach Reiki to others.
